More Information

Vanadinite takes its name from the uncommon element that comprises it: Vanadium. It forms through the oxidization of lead-based minerals, oftentimes Galena, and only in dry conditions. Its high lead content, almost three quarters by weight, gives it a surprising density for a crystal that does appear metallic. Vanadinite is typically a brownish red color, though brighter reds and oranges are also possible. While the color of a Vanadinite specimen can be remarkable, the most striking feature is more often the shape. Vanadinite crystals form in near-perfect hexagons, yielding otherworldly patterns of repeated geometric shapes.
