More Information

Elasmosaurus is a well known Plesiosaur, noted for having long necks with more vertebrae than more standard plesiosaurs. The greater number of vertebrae gave the Elasmosaurus more flexibility and control. One of the key ways they captured their prey was with their long thin teeth that interlocked when the jaw was closed. Their teeth are actually one of the defining characteristics of the Elasmosaurus; they had six teeth in each premaxilla. These marine dinosaurs were discovered in‭ ‬1868‭ ‬by Dr.‭ ‬Theophilus Turner, and since that time, many new specimens have been discovered and have even been assigned their own species within the genus.
