Petrified wood is another from of fossilization where all the organic matter has been replaced by minerals (usually a silicate, such as quartz) during a process called permineralization. The color of each piece is dependent upon whatever other minerals are present in the locality at the time of fossilization.

This gorgeously polished petrified wood stump has almost a monochromatic look to it with beautiful warm accent stripes. It is from Indonesia.
