Petrified wood is another from of fossilization where all the organic matter has been replaced by minerals (usually a silicate, such as quartz) during a process called permineralization. The color of each piece is dependent upon whatever other minerals are present in the locality at the time of fossilization.

This gorgeous polished petrified wood stump is from Indonesia. Streaks of warm browns are indicative of iron oxides present during permineralization.
