The term Geode is derived from the Greek word Geoides, meaning "earthlike." A geode is a rock that contains a hollow cavity lined with crystals. Geodes can occur in any hollow space, but most often begin as bubbles in volcanic rock. They can also form in animal burrows, tree roots, or mud balls in sedimentary rock. Over time, the outer shell of the spherical shape hardens, and water containing dissolved silicates and/or carbonates precipitates on the inside walls of the hollow cavity. The precipitation can contain any variety of dissolved minerals; the most common being quartz, amethyst and calcite.
